The Solistes Européens Luxembourg and Christoph König are going to open their new season tonight with a concert under the title « Titans – Rota Fortunae » featuring music by Jeannot Sanavia, Hans Rott, and Gustav Mahler. Mahler called Rott “a musician of genius … who died unrecognised …on the very threshold of his career. … What music has lost in him cannot be estimated. Such is the height to which his genius soars in … [his] First Symphony [in E major], which he wrote as 20-year-old youth and makes him … the Founder of the New Symphony as I see it.” (Wikipedia) You will hear the first Movement of Rott’s First Symphony in E Major in juxtaposition with Mahler’s First, again in a slightly reduced version by Fernando Buide del Real , which puts much more emphasis on the chamber music aspects of Mahler’s score than the later added bombast.
